About Julian Clary


After studying Drama and English at Goldsmiths College, University of London, Julian Clary began working on the cabaret and alternative comedy scene in the 1980s, first under the alias Gillian Pieface and later as The Joan Collins Fan-club.

Since then, Clary has undertaken many successful tours of his stage act and stand-up comedy, including: The Mincing Machine Tour (1989), My Glittering Passage (1993), Natural Born Mincer, (2003), Lord of the Mince (2011), Position Vacant: Apply Within (2013), The Joy of Mincing (2016), Born To Mince (2020/22) and playing Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar (National tour 2023/4).

Julian began his television career in 1989 with regular appearances on Friday Night Live. Clary co-hosted the ITV game show Trick or Treat with Mike Smith. Channel 4 then offered Clary his own show, Sticky Moments with Julian Clary.

Other television credits include: Terry and Julian, All Rise for Julian Clary, Prickly Heat, It’s Only TV But I Like It, Has Anyone Seen My Pussy?, Strictly Come Dancing, Have I Got News for You, Who Do You Think You Are?, QI, Your Face Sounds Familiar, Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, Give a Pet a Home, Nature Nuts, My Family, Celebrity Big Brother, Passions: Noel Coward, Taskmaster (Series 16) and The Masked Singer (Christmas Special 2023).

Clary was a recurring and popular performer in a series of ITV’s pantomimes: He played many roles including the First Henchman and Tim in Jack and the Beanstalk; the Good Fairy in Cinderella; the Genie of the Lamp in Aladdin, and Chris the Cat in Dick Whittington.

Julian is also recognized for his work on stage. Most recently most recently playing Norman in a National Tour of the Dresser, opposite Mather Kelly.  In Le Grand Mort, written by Stephen Clark, Julian starred alongside James Nelson-Joyce at the Trafalgar Studios. He also appeared as Leigh Bowery in Boy George’s Taboo (West End and national tour) and as the Emcee in Rufus Norris’s Olivier Award- winning production of Cabaret (West End).

Julian made his London Palladium debut in 2016 as Dandini in Cinderella. The production broke box office records for the highest grossing week in West End theatre history. He returned to the Palladium in 2017 as the Spirit of the Bells in Dick Whittington, which won an Olivier Award and again in 2018 as the Man in the Mirror in Snow White, which was followed by Goldilocks and the Three Bears (2019), Pantoland (2020), Pantoland (2021), Jack and the Beanstalk (2022) and Peter Pan (2023).

His film credits include: The Baby Juice Express by Enterprise Films and Gerald Thomas’ Carry on Columbus.

He is a regular panellist on Radio 4’s Just a Minute.

He is a Sunday Times best-selling novelist, having written Murder Most Fab, Devil in Disguise, and Briefs Encountered and his autobiography, A Young Man’s Passage. His latest memoir The Lick of Love was published in October 2021. He has also written a series of six children’s books The Bolds which have sold over half a million copies.
